Feminist strike & protest gathering to be held in Athens on March 8

A so-called Feminist Strike will be held in the Greek capital Athens for the first time this coming Friday, March 8, at Klafthmonos Sq. in central Athens at 2:00 pm.
Feminist groups, women's initiatives, syndicates and parties say they are "calling on female workers in the state and private sectors, students and all women at large to walk out of their jobs, studies, family duties and any kind of shopping and take part in the Friday afternoon protest gathering."
"Women still comprise the majority of the jobless and the long-term unemployed, are under-represented in parliament as well as in political and economic decisions, are the victims of gender violence and enforced prostitution," says professor Maria Gatsouka, adding that "we are still strugling against the rise of the far-right and the kids-kitchen-church kind of expectations package for women."
The femimint mobilization started in 2016 as International Women's Day at the initiative of organizations in Europe, Asia, Africa and the US. More than five million women staged a mass job-walkout in Spain in 2018 on the day.
The strike and protest is supported by the Greek Confederation of Workers (GSEE), the Civil Servants Union (ADEDY), SYRIZA's women's rights groups, Movement for Change (KINAL) party as well as the Green Party.
The country's main umbrella workers' union, GSEE, is calling for a two-hour work stoppage in the private sector on Friday March 8, from 13:00 to 15:00.
