ND spokeswoman: Premier could have applied laws to protect Mati residents from wildfire

Main opposition New Democracy on Tuesday charged Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of "refusing to assume responsibility" for the management of the wildfire at Mati, through its spokeswoman Maria Spyraki.
Spyraki was commenting on a government-wide meeting on measures following the wildfires in Attica, which claimed the lives of nearly 100 people, that was chaired by Tsipras in Lavrio on Tuesday. ND's spokeswoman said, "A pathetic prime minister - who refuses to assume responsibility for the criminal lack of preparedness, the inexistent coordination, and the tragic management of the crisis in Mati - today announced the tearing down of illegal structures that should have taken place three years ago."
She added that nobody "except his ministers and the Attica region director" prevented him from applying existing laws and introducing works that would protect residents from natural disasters. "Tsipras bears the sole responsibility for this tragedy," she added.
