Rash of wildfires start in Chania, Crete overnight, threaten homes

Fire fighters in Chania, Crete were fighting a new wildfire on Thursday morning, this time near an inhabited area, following a rash of some 20 fires that broke out overnight in the region.
The latest front is burning in a location known as Kalamitsi Alexandrou in the Apokoronos municipality, with fire fighters' efforts focused on containing the blaze and keeping it inside the ravine where it started, south of the village.
Strong southerly winds blowing in the area are hampering fire-fighting efforts, while the entire fire brigade of the region has been mobilised in response to multiple fires that broke out in the region after midnight.
A neighbourhood in the village Kampi was evacuated overnight as a precaution, while the flames came dangerously close to homes in Palea Roumata and Limni during the night. Fire fighters were still at the scene of fires in Kakopetros, Palea Roumata, Nio Chorio, Limni, Kampi and Sfinari on Thursday morning.
