Tsipras declares national mourning after flash floods in Attica claim 15 lives

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras declared a day of national mourning after 15 people died in flash floods that hit western Attica earlier in the day.
"It is a very difficult time for all of Greece. We are experiencing a great disaster. I want to express my deep sorrow, sincere condolences to the families of the victims. And [I want to] pledge that we will stand by them with all the means in our disposal," he said.
Tsipras also announced that nobody will be left homeless and measures will be taken to support those affected, adding that the government will look into the causes of the disaster.

Six people were still missing in Western Attica on Thursday morning, following the flash floods that hit the region the previous day.

The fire Brigade and rescue teams were searching for a 50-year old man in Nea Peramos, an elderly man in Mandra and four truck and car drivers.

Meanwhile, the body of a man found early on Wednesday in the sea off the coast of Elefsina was identified by his relatives as that of a 47-year old truck driver who was transporting a load of fuel from Hellenic Petroleum (ELPE) plants in Elefsina to the city of Karpenissi.
