Police detain 120 migrants, 2 Greeks after clashes on Lesvos

Police ended up arresting early on Monday 120 adult migrants and refugees who were protesting living conditions at the Moria hotspot by camping out on the Sappho Square in Mytilini since last Tuesday.

The 120 included mostly Afghanis, in addition to two Greek protesters, all of whom are facing charges of insubordination to authority and illegal occupation of a public space.

They are being held at a police detention center on the island of Lesvos.

A night of violence ended in the capital of Lesvos, Mytilene at 5:30 on Monday morning when police forced protesting refugees and migrants camped out in Sappho Square onto a bus that took them back to the Reception and Identification Centre in Moria. The move followed violent clashes that spread from the square to Mytilene's wharf and surrounding streets on Sunday evening, when far-right militants targeted the migrants in the square and tried to break through a police cordon.

Authorities meanwhile confirmed that the number of people injured at clashes with police and taken to hospital for checking after the Monday night clashes with police totaled thirty. The injuries were mostly from stones, with some admitted with breathing problems from teargas.
