Consultants charged with active bribery in Athens metro case

ΜΑΡΟΓΑΝΝΗ ΜΑΡΙΑ

An Athens prosecutor on Wednesday brought felony bribery charges against two consultants of a joint venture that served as technical advisers for the construction of the Athens metro.
The charges were filed against the manager of consulting company OMEK and the head of engineering company Lahmeyer and are aggravated by the law on embezzlement against the State.
The suspects are accused of having allegedly paid around 210,000 euros in bribes to civil servants between 2003 and 2007 to win the state contract to provide consulting, planning and supervisory services on the Athens metro project.
According to the evidence, the kickbacks appear to have been paid through fake invoices issued by their company, based on Jersey Island. The recipients of the bribes have not been identified yet.
The case was assigned to a corruption investigative judge.
