Death toll from Attica downpour reaches seven

Heavy rain flooded the areas of Mandra, Nea Peramos and Megara, near Athens, on Wednesday, leaving seven dead and trapping several others in their homes and cars.

"We are doing our best to face the problems. There are more than 160 calls while 60 firemen are operating in these areas," the spokesperson of the Fire Brigade Stavroula Malliris said earlier on Wednesday in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

A state of emergency has now been declared in all three areas, while Alternate Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas is currently making his way there. According to government sources, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has also contacted Toskas on the phone and was briefed about the operations in the area.
